Christopher Lehmpfuhl

Born 1972 in Berlin
Lives and works in Berlin

Christopher Lehmpfuhl's paintings are about the ecstasy of an immediate experience of reality, of the act of seeing and of transforming what he sees into painting. Without exception, the artist paints in front of the motif - wearing paint-smeared clothing, he moves between the canvas, paint buckets and palette in a highly concentrated manner, repeatedly looking at his motif, stepping back and then applying the paint to the canvas with his bare hands using targeted movements. This creates three-dimensional colour reliefs with a highly tactile quality.
Starting out from his home city of Berlin, the artist expands the circle of his motifs when travelling at home and abroad: cityscapes, fields, forests, the sea, the mountains, in summer, in winter, in sunshine and blazing heat as well as in the rain or freezing cold in the snow.
Christopher Lehmpfuhl's performative act of painting is rooted in 19th century open-air painting and Impressionism. It is an expression of individual feelings as well as the creative powers of an artist who absorbs the atmosphere with all his senses and exposes himself to wind and weather in order to transform an overall impression of colours, moments of light, light moods, sounds, smells and feelings into painting.
